Beloved Educator Jim Early Passes Away at 87, Community Mourns

UPDATE: The community of Waterford is mourning the loss of esteemed educator and community leader James Donald “Jim” Early, who passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Known for his unwavering dedication to education and service, Jim touched countless lives throughout his career.

Jim was born on July 3 at Brady Hospital in Albany, New York. He shared his birthday celebrations with the nation’s Independence Day, symbolizing his vibrant spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication, survived by his loving sister Elizabeth M. Early, and four daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early. Tragically, his daughter Mary Ellen Early preceded him in death just months earlier on June 26, 2025.

Jim’s impact extended beyond his family. After briefly pursuing the priesthood, he dedicated over three decades to education, serving as a Guidance Counselor and later as an English Composition teacher at Hudson Valley Community College. His influence shaped the lives of many students until his retirement in December 1999.

For ten years post-retirement, Jim served with integrity as the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford, demonstrating his commitment to public service. A proud member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for 57 years, he was known for his camaraderie and dedication to his community.

In addition to his civic duties, Jim was a talented musician, serving as the organist at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy. His passion for music and community service was evident in his long-standing membership with the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club.

Throughout his later years, Jim faced health challenges but received loving care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home in Troy. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a mass at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at noon. Interment is scheduled at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford.

The Early family encourages contributions in Jim’s memory to The Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department. His legacy of service and compassion will be cherished by all who knew him. For those wishing to share memories or express condolences, visit www.Brendesefuneralhome.com.
