Tremonton Couple Acts Heroically After Fatal Police Shooting

Tremonton residents Sterling and Courtney Johnston showcased remarkable courage during a tragic incident that unfolded in their community this past August. Their quick actions helped save lives following the fatal shooting of two police officers, which has left a profound impact on the community.

In a town known for its close-knit community, the Johnstons moved to Tremonton to raise their three children, enjoying the small-town atmosphere where “everybody greets you at the door,” as Sterling Johnston described it. However, the serenity of that summer night was shattered when their children called home, reporting gunshots nearby.

Courtney Johnston recounted the moment when her child informed them of the alarming sounds. “He told me that he heard gunshots,” she said, prompting her to instruct her husband to drive towards the sports field where their children were playing. As they approached, Sterling Johnston encountered a chaotic scene filled with police lights and a sense of urgency.

Upon arrival, he discovered that two Tremonton police officers, Officer Eric Estrada and Sgt. Lee Sorensen, had been shot and killed. In addition, a Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy, Mike Allred, and his K-9, Azula, were also injured in the violence.

While many would have fled from danger, the Johnstons took decisive action. Sterling Johnston witnessed a man armed with a gun, kneeling on the ground. “I saw him come out of nowhere and kneel on the ground,” he recalled. Instead of succumbing to fear, he focused on de-escalating the situation. “I feel like God took over. I remember saying that his kids still love him,” he stated, leading the man to relinquish the weapon.

Courtney Johnston, who had rushed to the scene, was on the phone with emergency services, trying to provide clear information despite her shock. “I kind of just panicked a little bit,” she admitted, explaining how she threw the gun into a nearby field after her husband handed it to her.

Their actions not only prevented further violence but also showcased the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity. As the couple waited for law enforcement to arrive, they remained close to the man, unsure of the next steps, but committed to ensuring no more harm befell anyone present.

The Johnstons’ bravery has been recognized by the community, where they are hailed as heroes for their selfless intervention. The tragic loss of two officers has cast a shadow over Tremonton, but the couple’s actions serve as a poignant reminder of the strength and compassion that can emerge in times of crisis.

In the aftermath, the community has rallied together to support the families of the fallen officers, as well as to honor the sacrifices made by those who serve and protect. The Johnstons’ story is one of hope amid tragedy, showcasing that even in the darkest moments, courage and compassion can shine through.
