Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of South Korea’s ruling People Power Party, has called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate allegations that various political figures have received money and gifts linked to the Unification Church. This request comes amid ongoing concerns regarding the impartiality of current investigations led by special prosecutor Min Jung-ki.
During a press briefing at the National Assembly on December 15, 2023, Song emphasized the necessity of a special prosecutor to “restore judicial justice.” He pointed to allegations involving political funds associated with the Unification Church, particularly those tied to the opposition Democratic Party. According to Song, these claims have not been sufficiently examined and warrant a comprehensive investigation.
Song’s remarks highlighted his criticism of Min’s investigative approach, which he described as politically motivated. He accused the special prosecutor of abandoning principles of neutrality and fairness, suggesting that Min operates as a means of retaliation against opposition parties. Moreover, Song argued that the special prosecutor’s office should be disbanded and subjected to scrutiny itself.
