During the holiday season, Altru Health System in Grand Forks transforms into a welcoming space for patients and caregivers, as staff members go the extra mile to create a festive atmosphere. According to Courtney Caron, a case manager at Altru, the hospital becomes a “home away from home” for many during this time of year. Through special events, decorations, and enhanced patient care, the staff strives to bring joy and comfort to those who find themselves in the hospital over the holidays.
Hundreds of employees at Altru are dedicated to caring for patients and their families, especially when many associate this season with relaxation and family gatherings. Kortney Clarke, an intensive care unit nurse, notes that despite the common perception of the holidays, people do fall ill and require medical attention. “They still deserve to be cared for,” she stated, emphasizing the commitment of the staff to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Altru Health System hosts various holiday events aimed at uplifting spirits. In November, the organization holds a food drive to assist patients in need. Over Thanksgiving, a Thanksgiving tree is displayed in the hospital, allowing both staff and patients to express gratitude. During the festive season, departments participate in an “adopt-a-family” initiative, donating gifts to those in need. Additionally, Altru organizes a candlelight memorial service for families grieving the loss of a child, providing a space for remembrance and support.
Recognizing that hospitals are not typically where people wish to spend the holidays, Caron highlighted the importance of creating a special environment. “Making it comfortable and still feel special for them is really important,” she remarked. Staff members also contribute to the festive atmosphere by decorating their departments and donning holiday attire.
While patient care remains a priority, the hospital staff also supports one another. Employees willingly swap shifts to accommodate those who wish to take time off during the holidays, and they come together for department-wide potlucks to foster camaraderie. Clarke shared that these gatherings help make working through the holidays feel more rewarding and enjoyable.
To ensure a fair distribution of holiday shifts, the scheduling process often takes place years in advance. According to Ken Hanson, senior marketing and communications specialist at Altru, staff members receive “holiday premiums” as a means of recognizing their commitment during this busy time. “In health care, patient needs don’t pause for holidays, and staffing is critical every day of the year,” he explained. This premium serves as an acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by employees who work during significant cultural and national holidays.
Although the holiday season sees increased efforts to create a joyful environment, Caron emphasized that the quality of patient care remains consistent throughout the year. “Helping our patients and caring for our community is really who we are,” she stated, reflecting on the pride the staff takes in their work, especially during the holiday season.
Altru Health System’s commitment to its patients and staff during this time illustrates the profound impact care and compassion can have on those facing health challenges. As the holidays approach, the dedication of the Altru team shines brightly, reminding everyone of the importance of community and support in healthcare.
