UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has been issued for Suffolk County, effective from 10 p.m. today until 1 p.m. on Sunday. The National Weather Service confirmed this advisory at 2:27 a.m., warning residents to brace for total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches.
Travelers should prepare for hazardous conditions, as roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to be slick and treacherous. The advisory urges everyone to “slow down and use caution while traveling.” With winter weather leading to over 6,000 weather-related fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries annually, prioritizing safety is crucial during these conditions.
As snowfall increases, the risk of icy roadways skyrockets. The National Weather Service emphasizes that when temperatures hover near freezing, drivers should assume that icy conditions exist. Drivers are advised to avoid driving if possible. If travel is necessary, select routes that minimize exposure to trees and power lines, which can bring down limbs and pose additional dangers.
In case of encountering downed power lines, do not touch them. Instead, call 911 immediately. To ensure safety on the roads, the National Weather Service has provided essential winter driving tips:
1. **Share Your Travel Plans**: Inform friends or family of your route and expected arrival time before venturing out.
2. **Prepare Your Vehicle**: Keep your gas tank full and equip your vehicle with winter essentials, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blankets, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
3. **Stay Calm if Stranded**: If you find yourself stuck, notify someone of your situation and location. Avoid attempting to walk to safety. Instead, signal for help by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror and use your dome light and flashers to increase visibility.
4. **Be Aware of Snow Plows**: Allow snow plows plenty of room to pass, and only overtake them when you have a clear view ahead.
5. **Check Road Conditions**: Stay updated on road conditions to make informed decisions about your travel.
The situation is developing, and the National Weather Service continues to monitor the storm closely. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and heed all safety advisories. By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce your risk of accidents and ensure your well-being during this challenging winter weather.
