St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Dazzles with Bach’s Concertos This Weekend

UPDATE: The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) is captivating audiences with its annual presentation of Bach’s “Brandenburg” Concertos, performing live at the Ordway in St. Paul this weekend. The concerts, showcasing five of the six concertos, blend a festive spirit with remarkable musical intimacy, making them a must-see event this holiday season.

The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, offering a unique experience that brings together distinguished musicians and the vibrant sounds of Bach. This year’s program highlights the orchestra’s exceptional talent, featuring soloists like violinist Eunae Koh and principal violin Kyu-Young Kim, who deliver spellbinding performances that resonate with the audience.

As attendees were immersed in the soundscape, the concert opened with the jubilant “Brandenburg” Concerto No. 1. The piece’s lively spirit, characterized by its dance-like energy, was brought to life by three oboes, two horns, and a violin solo. Koh’s assertive yet graceful violin lines captivated listeners, especially during a breathtaking oboe solo that set the stage for the concerto’s warm, festive atmosphere.

The orchestra then transitioned to the Sixth Concerto, which uniquely omits violins, spotlighting two violas that create a rich, dusky sound. The second movement’s quiet glow and the third movement’s buoyant melody provided a striking contrast, showcasing the concerto’s emotional depth.

After intermission, the Fifth Concerto took center stage, where Jeffrey Grossman commanded the harpsichord with impressive vigor. His dynamic performance, marked by rapid shifts and an exuberant cadenza, energized the audience, evoking the thrill of a video game soundtrack.

The Third Concerto followed, a crowd favorite known for its intricate interplay among musicians. With its crisp articulation and athletic edge, the SPCO transformed this technically challenging piece into a vibrant showcase of talent, as each musician contributed to the ensemble’s shared narrative.

Concluding the evening, the Fourth Concerto featured a dazzling performance by Kim alongside flutists Julia Bogorad-Kogan and Alicia McQuerrey. Their nimble, conversational interplay created an uplifting finale that left the audience in awe.

This weekend’s concerts not only celebrate the brilliance of Bach but also highlight the SPCO’s commitment to showcasing the beauty of chamber music. The performances will continue at the Ordway through December 14, 2025, inviting audiences to share in this joyous holiday tradition.
