A new romance bookstore, Finney’s Books, is set to make its debut in East Austin, Texas, with a grand opening scheduled for December 13. Located at 3823 Airport Blvd., #D, this independent store aims to cater to the growing demand for romance novels, which have seen a remarkable surge in sales. According to consumer research company Circana, romance book sales are projected to double by 2025, reflecting an evolving interest in the genre.
As romance novels continue to dominate bestsellers lists, they often face criticism for their clichés and tropes. Despite this, Finney’s Books embraces these elements, positioning itself as a welcoming environment for readers of all backgrounds. The store’s mission is to provide “a safe space for romance readers of all identities,” according to its press release. Its inventory will feature a diverse range of titles, from “sweet contemporary romances with a hint of spice” to more adventurous adult stories that fully embrace their dramatic and steamy nature.
The name of the bookstore pays tribute to its owner, Cameron Lagrone, whose dog inspired its creation. Lagrone expressed her passion for the genre on the store’s website, stating, “In the last couple of years, like so many folks around me, I discovered the absolute JOY to be found in romance books.” She noted that her perception of romance novels has shifted dramatically, recognizing them as narratives that celebrate love and pleasure in various forms. As a queer woman, Lagrone is particularly excited about the expanding catalog of queer love stories available to readers.
The grand opening celebration will run from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on the opening day. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy coffee from Please Stay Coffee and baked goods from The AniCakes Co., along with other refreshments. To mark the occasion, the first 25 visitors will receive a free branded tote bag. Additionally, customers who purchase a book will be entered into a giveaway for signed books and “bookish merch bundles.” Every attendee will also receive a bookmark while supplies last.
