UPDATE: The holiday season has officially begun in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, with the spectacular lighting display known as “Peteyville” now shining brightly. On November 28, the lights were turned on, transforming the town into a magical winter wonderland that will captivate visitors until January 4.
Doug Bruggeman, a retired high school teacher, leads this festive initiative, bringing joy to families and creating a sense of community. “This is Pete’s little lighted village. So thus, Peteyville,” Bruggeman explained, referencing the iconic Pelican Pete statue that adds to the charm of the display.
The project started four years ago as a bold vision to light up the suspension bridge. “One of the things I talked to my students about was having big hairy, audacious visions. My big vision was to light the suspension bridge,” Bruggeman shared. Today, that vision has expanded to include three parks featuring an impressive 59 sponsored displays.
Visitors can expect to see a variety of festive decorations, including nutcrackers and candy canes, all meticulously arranged by Bruggeman and his dedicated crew. As he sorted through lights, zip ties, and extension cords, he remarked, “They end up looking pretty sweet when they start to get lit up.”
The buzz around Peteyville is palpable, with families planning visits from far and wide. “My adult children are bringing our grandchildren here from California. We’re coming home for Christmas because we’re going to Peteyville,” one excited local shared.
Bruggeman’s efforts have sparked joy and nostalgia in the community, with many likening the experience to a Hallmark movie. “A bunch of people were like, ‘Man, this is like a Hallmark movie.’ For a guy who loves It’s a Wonderful Life, that touched the George Bailey in me,” he said.
